Cavtat

Once the site of the Roman town of Epidaurum, Cavtat (English tsav..tat) is the Croatian name for Civitas Vetus. The town was sacked by the Avars in the 7th century, many refugees from Epidaurum fled up the coast and founded Dubrovnik. The characteristicly Mediterranean seafront is lined with restaurants and bars, it provides a watering hole for yachts cruising around the Adriatic. Situated at the end of the promenade is the 15th century church of St. Blaise (Sv. Vlaho) and a Franciscan monastery. Up the hill from the church stands the Racic Mausoleum.

Cavtat is a convenient day trip from Dubrovnik, it may be reached by a number 10 bus or by a tourist boat service from the old harbour. The town has a population of about 2000 people and provides an attractive and quieter alternative base to Dubrovnik. The airport is also closer to Cavtat, although the aircraft are not intrusive.
