Korcula Town
Korcula town is the principal town on the island of Korcula. One of the famous medieval Dalmatian towns of the Adriatic, it has been fought over by the Greeks, Croats, Venetians and Genovese. Korcula is surrounded by 13th century walls which were reinforced by the Venetians in the 15th century. Said to be the birth place of Marco Polo, a house dedicated to the explorer is open to the public. A feature of the town is the alignment of the streets which were designed to reduce the effects of the Bora wind.
Notable buildings within the walls are the Cathedral of St Mark and the adjacent Bishop's palace, which are to be found in Strossmayerov trg. - the central square.
The island of Korcula is situated off the Peljesac peninsula. A pedestrian and a separate vehicle ferry sail from the town of Orebic. Ferries which call at Korcula also visit Split and Dubrovnik. Buses from Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik serve the island. The island of Korcula has an abundance of pine forests and mountains run the length of it. There are a number of beaches around the island, fishing and windsurfing are popular activities.
