McDonnell-Douglas MD-80
The MD-80 aircraft started life as the DC-9 Super 80 series. The MD prefix was essentially just a re-branding of an established product. The MD-80 series continued the policy of product development which was always part of the DC-9 design philosophy. Apart from the MD-87 which was actually smaller than the MD-81 each new mark was bigger and heavier than the preceding version. The MD-88 was a re-engineered MD-82, eight of which were actually rebuilt MD-82's and 150 were new build machines.
